Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is still in progress, to be continued here and in more cities. Full documentation, movie, map and ‘How to make your own dead drop’ manual coming soon! Stay tuned."

Slapstick Humor: 'Jackass 3D' and Its Comedy Tradition

Slapstick Humor: 'Jackass 3D' and Its Comedy Tradition: "On Oct. 11, the Museum of Modern Art held a screening of Jackass 3D, which opened in theaters on Friday. It's safe to say that when Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee-Man and the rest of the Jackass crew started to film one another getting hit in the crotch, they probably didn't expect to be featured by such an eminent artistic institution. While a healthy debate can be waged over whether making urine snow cones and eating them is art, their version of modern-day slapstick has its roots in a long line of classic comedy pioneers who realized that sometimes the funniest thing to watch is other people's misfortune. As MoMA curator Josh Siegel told the New York Times, Jackass 3D is 'merely the climax — or the lowest depths, if you prefer — of a tradition that dates back to 1895, when the Lumière brothers drenched a poor sap with a garden hose and filmed it.'"

A Father Who Creatively Captures His Kids (20 photos): "If there was a prize that could be given out to the most creative father, I'd hope that it was awarded to Jason Lee. Human landscapes in SW Florida

Human landscapes in SW Florida: "A couple weeks ago, I was listening to a story by NPR's Planet Money team about 'Toxie' a toxic asset they had purchased to follow and help tell the story of the recent financial meltdown. One of the mortgages in Toxie was on a home bought for investment in Bradenton, Florida, and the team took a look at housing in the area. Many homes there are empty and have been for years. Huge developments sit partially completed among densely built up neighborhoods and swampland. A guest stated that there were 'enough housing lots in Charlotte County to last for more than 100 years'. Boom and bust residential development has drastically affected parts of southwest Florida for decades now, and I spent some time (with the help of Google Earth), looking around the area. With permission from the fine folks at Google, here are a few glimpses at development in southwest Florida."

Incredible 52 Canon camera "Matrix" style setup!: "We’ve seen some pretty incredible stuff lately, but how about this set up of 52 Canon cameras working together to make a “Matrix” like movie move for the Rip Curl surfing site? Stunning! I’ve always loved that look of moving around a frozen image of something really in motion and to see it done for surfing is just outstanding. It doesn’t hurt that they used my favorite camera either."

How to Install and Run Silverlight in Linux

How to Install and Run Silverlight in Linux: "Love it or hate it, we all know Flash, but Microsoft’s equivalent, Silverlight, is a bit less well known. With Silverlight you can stream video and create animations, in fact you can even use it to create Windows sidebar widgets. However, in what may come as a bit of a shock, Microsoft Silverlight doesn’t play nice with Linux. I know, I know, it’s hard to believe, but true. To remedy this, the folks at the Mono project have created Moonlight – an open source implementation of Silverlight. If you find yourself wanting to access a Silverlight-only broadcast or game, but not wanting to install a second operating system for the privilege, we’ve got you covered."

"If you get bored with nothing to do, you are not a writer": Guillermo del Toro's words to live by: "What really happened was this: del Toro talked about his book for like 10 minutes, then opened it up to questions for the next hour or two, talking about everything from the book (conceived 'before vampires were teenybopper dreams'), to how the Hellboy comics saved his life while he was shooting Mimic, to Hitchcock (did you know he wrote a book on Hitchcock? Me neither)."

Use Your Favorite Font on Your Website with CSS Web Fonts

Use Your Favorite Font on Your Website with CSS Web Fonts: "In the early days of the Internet, typography was a phase of website design that was either completely overlooked or given just a few minutes if time permitted. Over time, a website's visual appeal grew more and more important until typography was given its rightful place in the design process. While pictures and graphics may draw the user to your site, in the end it is the content (i.e. the words) that the website is out there to convey. So eventually, you have to make the text look appealing too."

Why Geeks Hate Hipsters

Why Geeks Hate Hipsters: "Today, Joel Johnson of Gizmodo wrote an article. Maybe you've seen it. Probably you haven't. But he's clearly going through an identity crisis, trying to reconcile his self-described geekdom with his so very clear love of himself, and in doing so decides that geeks should be nicer to hipsters, which is to say, geeks should be nicer to Joel Johnson. I can sympathize with that. Yet I cannot allow him to pass off Hipster as some blameless enitity, hated simply for being, as that is not the case. Joel offers some advice: 'attack their arguments!'"
