HTML5 Audio and Video: What you Must Know
HTML5 Audio and Video: What you Must Know: A LONG TIME AGO, in a galaxy that feels a very long way away, multimedia on the Web was limited to tinkling MIDI tunes and animated GIFs. As bandwidth got faster and compression technologies improved, MP3 music supplanted MIDI and real video began to gain ground. All sorts of proprietary players battled it out—Real Player, Windows Media, and so on—until one emerged as the victor in 2005: Adobe Flash, largely because of the ubiquity of its plugin and the fact that it was the delivery mechanism of choice for YouTube.

How Should We Make Hard Decisions?
How Should We Make Hard Decisions? :#smart #thrifty #buy #decision We live in a world filled with difficult decisions. In fact, we’ve managed to turn even trivial choices – say, picking a toothpaste – into a tortured mental task, as the typical supermarket has more than 200 different dental cleaning options. Should I choose a toothpaste based on fluoride content? Do I need a whitener in my toothpaste? Is Crest different than Colgate? The end result is that the banal selection becomes cognitively demanding, as I have to assess dozens of alternatives and take an array of variables into account. And it’s not just toothpaste: The same thing has happened to nearly every consumption decision, from bottled water to blue jeans to stocks. There are no simple choices left – capitalism makes everything complicated.

Do games engines like Unity with paid extensions stunt the educational growth of would-be programmers?
Do games engines like Unity with paid extensions stunt the educational growth of would-be programmers?: I have been designing my game, working on the art assets, and learning programming for the last year (or has it been two years? So much work in a video game...haha...) but honestly it's mainly been a hard focus on creating graphics and very very little in learning to code. Over 6 months ago decided on Unity. While creating the purely 2D art assets (which are almost completely finished and ready to be in the game, which I've been told takes the majority of development time in video game creation), I've dabbled to learn in Unity3D, created a simple 2D game, and although my major project is ambitious, I am still only working to release smaller games first. Specifically, I want to see if my designs and graphics sell well in the mobile market, as if they were successful enough I could use the money to fund a more talented artist to transform my design from a 2D world into a 3D one, and perhaps eventually even use something like the Hero Engine if it became that successful to warrant a lot of multiplayer users.

Adding a Touchscreen Interface to a DIY Project
Adding a Touchscreen Interface to a DIY Project: #diy #electronics @make “Resistive” touchscreens are the type you’re most likely to use in a DIY microcontroller project. These consist of two screen layers coated with a resistive material and separated by a small gap. When touched, the layers make contact, creating a voltage divider circuit. The resulting voltage is easily measured and correlated to position. The top layer of the touchscreen is just a clear overlay, though; what really makes it work is the layer underneath. Approaches to implementing a screen range from putting a printed sheet behind a touchscreen for a static touch interface—actually a fairly simple method to pull off—to something as full-featured as an LCD smartphone display. Here are the three main options.

New York Institute of Technology + Popeye and Mighty Mouse Animators = Start of Computer Animation
New York Institute of Technology + Popeye and Mighty Mouse Animators = Start of Computer Animation: From the 1920s through to the early 1960s the New York area was home to two major animation studios: The Fleischer Studios (which later became Paramount Pictures' Famous Studios) and Terrytoons.
The Fleischer Studios produced the Betty Boop, Popeye, and Superman cartoons; while Terrytoons had Mighty Mouse, Heckle & Jeckle, and Tom Terrific.
These studios were no longer in existence when I started my career in animation in the mid-1970s. However, my first job at New York Institute of Technology landed me right in the middle of the most talented group of animators who had worked at Fleischer/Famous and Terrytoons. It was from these animators (Johnny Gentilella, Marty Taras, Dante Barbetta and Earl James) that I received my on-the-job training in the basics and mechanics of animation.
